Iquitos

Not every city in the range is in the mountains. Iquitos is the other Peru: a river city in the flat green Amazon basin, reached only by boat or plane, hot and wet every day of the year. It is the far end of the country from the altiplano, and our Iquitos cap is the far end of the range: forest-green twill with a handwoven brim, the green family, Pacha, the earth.

The river city

Iquitos sits on the left bank of the Amazon about 100 metres above sea level and 3,700 kilometres from the sea, and half a million people live there without a single road connecting them to the rest of Peru. Everything comes up the river. The rubber boom of the 1890s built its tiled mansions and the iron house said to be designed by Eiffel; the boom ended and the jungle stayed. The city is loud, humid and run by three-wheeled motorcycle taxis.

Belén

The district of Belén is built on the river itself: houses on stilts and on rafts that rise and fall with the water, which changes level by several metres between seasons. Its market is where the jungle comes to town, fish, fruit, medicine, and cloth, though the weaving of the Amazon is bark cloth and cotton, not the wool aguayo of the highlands. We name the cap for the green, not for a weave.

The cap named Iquitos

The Iquitos is a five-panel camp cap in forest-green twill with a handwoven stripe brim in green, gold and red, in adult and kids sizes. With the kids size it makes the Iquitos matching set. It shares the earth family with the El Alto snapback and the Cochabamba bag.
